The Story Of The Heceta Head Ghost
The Heceta Head ghost is a legend that has been around for many years on the Scenic Oregon Coast. There are some people that really believe in her and Heceta House has landed on the list of the ten most haunted houses in the United States.
The ghost seems to reside in the light keepers house instead of the lighthouse. The spirit of a lady nicknamed Rue, or the “Gray Lady” is said to reside in the attic of the house.
Rue was the wife of an assistant light keeper in the 1890’s. It seems that her young daughter died and was buried on the premises.
The young girl’s grave is suppose to be somewhere on the grounds surrounding the lighthouse.
It is said that Rue haunts the house, ever searching for her daughter. If this is true, it is a very sad story and I feel sorry for her.
Heceta House
Nearly every resident since the 1950’s has reported unusual activity and those reports continue to this day. At least all of the incidents have been friendly and sometime just mischievous. Rue doesn’t seem to like it when they do construction or repairs on the house.
One of the most widely know incidents is that of a workman who came face to face with Rue in the attic. He went up to the attic to replace a window and he turned around and saw an old lady floating across the floor. He ran out of the house and said that he would never go back to the attic.
The next day he went to fix the window from the outside. He broke the old glass into the attic and put in the new window. That night after he fixed the window they heard scratching sounds in the attic. The next day they went up there to investigate and they found a pile of glass that had been swept up neatly into a pile and they knew it had to have been by the old lady.
Since the Heceta Head Lighthouse was turned over to the state the light keepers house has been restored to its original splendor. It is now an Interpretive Center by day and a Bed and Breakfast by night.
