Hiking The Oregon Coast

Oregon Coast Hiking Trail Hiking the Oregon Coast is more than “the coast of Oregon.” It’s a stretch of beautiful land that if possible, should be experienced first-hand – especially by those who love nature.

Seemingly untouched through Time, this natural treasure is home to hundreds of different species of animals and plants, commingling in a picturesque setting. From seabirds to sea lions, wildflowers to waterfalls, the Oregon Coast is a singular, unforgettable experience.

Geographically speaking, the Oregon Coast does indeed span the state’s coastline along the Pacific Ocean. Starting at Astoria, it meanders some 360 miles, all the way to the California border.

Though you may find such breadth intimidating, the Oregon Coast can easily be hiked by every skill level, from the novice to the experienced trekker. To make sense of the dozens of possible trails though – as well as the lush forests, sandy dunes, lagoons, and peaceful beaches – be sure to consult an expert before you set out.

What You Need For Hiking

Oregon Coast Trail What makes the Oregon Coast so remarkable is that its land remains public, enforced by state law. This means that all the wonderful trails found along its stretch are open to you always. All it asks in return is that you help maintain it and protect it with good etiquette.

Another reason to stay on a trail though is safety. You wouldn’t want to get lost, but you also wouldn’t want to encounter poison ivy or snakes. What’s more, the trails are defined for a reason. In them, there’s inherent advice. Heed it and you’ll have an amazing hike!

As for what to bring along with you, in addition to a map and guidebook: bottled water, a camera, binoculars or viewing scope, and warm clothes, especially a jacket. Always cool, thanks to the Pacific Ocean, the trails entering higher elevations tend to be cooler; and depending on the time of year, you may even encounter snow.

Oregon Coast’s trails

As said, the personal skill needed to hike the Oregon trails is varied. As is trail length. What are you up for? That’s what you need to ask. Is it a beginner two-mile hike, like the sojourn to Sweet Creek Falls in Florence? Or is it more advanced, like the 17-mile trek that takes you along the North Fork Smith River?

Whichever fits you, that’s the one you should try. No doubt, all Oregon hikes offer something unique in their undertaking and in the end, it’s up to you as far as what you can handle. The great thing about the Oregon Coast’s trails is that no matter the choice, the reward is sure to be worth it. It never disappoints.

  • Some trails wind through state parks. A single-day use permit costs $3.
  • Practice good hiking etiquette, meaning keep the land clean and clear.
  • Familiarize yourself with poison ivy: what does it look like?
